The ChouChou Electric Butterfly Flutters its Wings and Runs on Batteries

Taken from a review at the Japan Toy Fair 2010

For the folks out there that grew up in the country, and some in the city too, chances are at some point you once kept a caterpillar in a jar to watch it grow, cocoon itself and then emerge into life as a butterfly. And now, you can have that great jar-tapping experience any time, and without raising a caterpillar, thanks to the folks at ChouChou.

We’ve seen a lot of different robots out here, but the ChouChou Electric Butterfly may well be the first robotic butterfly that’s been made commercially available. Powered by two AA batteries in the lid, the Electric Butterfly responds to vibration and people tapping the lid and also sound, much like a regular butterfly would do haphazardly. But now, you can keep that butterfly all day, every day, for the rest of your life if you’re so inclined and without all the nature guilt that would come with keeping a butterfly in a jar until it died.
